6 Ways to Wish Indonesians “Happy Birthday”
In the list below you will find different ways of congratulating an Indonesian. Some of these are short forms specifically for social media or informal conversations. Others, on the other hand, have a more general meaning and can of course be used in many different ways.

It’s best if you apply your knowledge right away and surprise an Indonesian friend, acquaintance or relative with a “Happy Birthday” in Indonesian. But don’t be surprised if you get a “Terima kasih!” or “Terima kasih banyak!” back, which means something like “(Thank you very much”). And don’t forget: Variety makes life nicer – so you have several ways to congratulate an Indonesian.
Birthday gifts for Indonesians
It is often very difficult to choose the right gift – even more so if you are of a different nationality. Of course you can’t go wrong with vouchers, gifts of money, fragrances, technology and games – but these are just standard gifts. However, Indonesians also enjoy local and regional products from their country, as well as technical items. Of course you can mix Indonesian products with your own regional products and have a perfect and delicious gift. Note that not all goods may be imported or exported to the EU or India.
Alternatively, I have a few specific tips for you as to which gifts Indonesians are happy about.
- Batik Clothing: Batik is a traditional Indonesian handicraft that is made on fabrics and is very commonly used in clothing. A tie-dye dress or blouse can be a special gift that honors Indonesian culture and tradition.
- Indonesian Handicrafts: Indonesia has a rich tradition of handicraft making. Carved wooden figures, fine metalwork, traditional dolls, beautiful pottery and fine jewelry are just a few examples of Indonesian handicrafts.
- Indonesian food: Indonesian cuisine is known for its variety of tastes. A voucher for an Indonesian restaurant or a basket of Indonesian food and spices can be a special gift.
- Indonesia Travel Experiences: Indonesia has many amazing places to visit like Borobudur Temple, Taman Mini Indonesia Park or the beautiful beaches of Bali. A trip to Indonesia or a tour to one of these places can be an unforgettable gift.
- Indonesian Music or Movies: Music and movies are important parts of Indonesian culture. A CD or DVD of Indonesian music or films makes a perfect gift.
Indonesian birthday party – this is how people celebrate in Indonesia
In Indonesia, birthdays are traditionally celebrated as important occasions and can therefore be very festive. I would like to give you some typical elements that can appear in an Indonesian birthday party:
- Traditional Food: Food celebrations are very important in Indonesia and there are many traditional dishes that can be served at birthday celebrations. There may be a special type of rice dish or noodle dish typically served at birthday parties, as well as a variety of snacks and sweets.
- Birthday Cake: A birthday cake is an important part of an Indonesian birthday celebration. The cake is often elaborately decorated and provided with candles. The birthday person is asked to blow out the candles while all the guests sing “Happy Birthday”.
- Traditional Clothing: Many Indonesians wear traditional clothing for birthday celebrations. Women often wear dresses or sarongs while men wear shirts and traditional pants.
- Gifts: As in many other cultures, gifts are exchanged in Indonesia. Monetary gifts are often given to the birthday child, but other gifts such as clothing, jewelery or electronic devices are also (now) common.
- Music and Dance: Music and dance play an important role in Indonesian celebrations. There may be live music or a music system, and it is common to dance traditional dances such as jaipongan or saman dances.
It should be noted that the way birthdays are celebrated in Indonesia can vary by region and community.
